What is Baptism?

September 23, 2015 by Rick Leave a Comment

There are many mistaken ideas as to what Biblical baptism actually is. Some believe that one must be baptized in order to be saved. Others believe that babies must be baptized. Others believe that baptism is necessary in order to obtain spiritual gifts. Some even disregard baptism altogether. So, what does the Bible actually teach about Baptism? Who should be baptized? How should one be baptized? What does baptism mean? How is it related to our salvation? Listen to the message below to discover what exactly the Bible teaches about baptism.

Acts 8:26-39   Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place.  27 And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship  28 and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah.  29 And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.”  30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?”  31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.  32 Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this: “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth.  33 In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.”  34 And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?”  35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus.  36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?”  37 And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he replied, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”  38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.  39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing.

The Humble Birth of Our Sovereign Lord
 Luke 2:1-7

When the Lord Jesus Christ walked this earth, he humbled himself in becoming a man. More than this, he humbled himself by becoming a servant. Further still, Christ gave himself as a sacrifice for the sins of others. Listen as we learn about the humble birth of our sovereign Lord.

Christ Announced to the Shepherds
 Luke 2:8-20

Shepherd’s were unskilled and largely uneducated. Their occupation prevented them from observing all of the Law, and so they were forbidden from Synagogue worship. Only lepers were viewed as lower than shepherds. Yet, in a pattern that we will see repeated throughout Luke’s gospel, it is these lowly men to whom God gave great spiritual privilege. They were the first, outside the holy family, to receive news of the birth of the Messiah. Listen as we hear Christ announced to the Shepherds.

Christ, the Divider
Luke 2:21-40

Simeon told Mary of Jesus “this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel”. Christ came to earth to divide. How so?  Through His call to repentance, His demand that men follow Him and His claim to be exclusive Saviour and Lord. The Birth of the Lord Jesus Christ forever drew a line in the sand, either one would follow Christ and be saved or reject Him and be damned. Listen as we learn of Christ, the Divider.

God Breaks His Silence – Zacharias and Elisabeth
 Luke 1:5-14

It has been 400 years since there was prophecy and divine revelation in Israel. Malachi the last of the Old Testament prophets ended his book with the promise of another prophet who would “turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers”. God’s people were left in anticipation of a Messiah and the one who would precede him. God now breaks his silence and sends his messenger to reveal the divine plan for redemption. It seems to be the divine pattern for God to wait until things seem hopeless before he intervenes. But He does intervene and this time it is to bring forth the Saviour of the world.

 The Annunciation to Mary
 Luke 1:26-38
